Spain processed more than 17,000 incoming international instant transfers in the first half of 2026, with beneficiaries typically receiving funds within 10 seconds, Swift reported on October 19.
The payments originated in 102 countries, passing through 544 originating financial institutions to 75 participating institutions in Spain. Swift and Iberpay have collaborated since 2021 to connect Spain’s domestic instant payment infrastructure with international flows.
In 2024, Iberpay became the first European payment system to process One-Leg-Out transfers under the European Payments Council’s OCT Inst scheme. That year, 94% of Spain’s market was connected to the framework.
BBVA, Santander and CaixaBank participate in Swift’s payments scheme. Connected corridors include Australia, China, Türkiye and the United States.
“Shared standards, interoperability and collaboration across the ecosystem are essential to scaling innovation and delivering greater value to customers,” said Eva Rubio, Head of Global Transaction Banking at BBVA Corporate & Investment Banking.
Digital Trade Outlook’s View
The useful evidence is the live transaction flow across many institutions, rather than another bilateral pilot. Connecting domestic instant rails with common international standards offers a practical route to scale. Banks should still distinguish fast beneficiary credit from the costs, currency conversion and exception handling across the entire transfer.
